| What is it?It's the "Maine Tree Creature", an unexplained lump of fur sitting still on a tree branch, that has captured the attention of the cryptozoology world. Skeptics say it's probably a porcupine, but no one knows much of anything yet about the beast.
Video footage of the animal showed up on youtube, attracting the attention of Coast-to-Coast AM and The Fortean Times, which is where I first heard about the creature. There's very little information on the web about the animal, and the originators of the video have yet to come forward with any information. enhansed video here

| When the youtube first starts out it resembles the back of a man with a blankie over him. At 0:22 it looks like he turns around and you can see his face. The blanket appears to only go so far as his bottom and he's kneeling on the limb.
Why would you say "he's here Dad" if you just ran up on something in a tree?
Wouldn't you think, if you didn't know what something was would you say "It's" if you hadn't seen it before?
I thought I heard a dog panting & the jingle of tags. You'd assume that the whistling was to cause what was in the tree to turn around, but I think that was for the dog. With a male voice saying something that sounded like "tree of freedom", maybe it was a bear and the dog had chased it til it went up a tree.
I haven't seen a real bear in a tree, but I don't think they could sit like that when they're up on a limb. That would have to be a pretty big bear to look as big as it did from the distance it was filmed in the first part of the vid. The size of the trunk and limb compared with the object, way too big to be a porcupine.

| From behind it looked like one of the black bears I've seen up in the smokies... but when it turned around the face is wrong, from the front it almost looks like a monkey, at least the face and the hands. | |

| Times like these you just wish you would have been there. Oh and of course prepaired to out sit whoever - whatever it is from a distance. You wouldn't want to cause it to die up there or pass out n' fall from starvation - dehydration rather than come down.
Tracks too! One of the comments posted on the youtubed mentioned if there were any tracks found. There should have been some in the snow unless it had just gotten through snowing.

| Mother bears often leave their cubs in trees to protect them while they go out foraging for food (I just did a quick search and there are bears in Maine). As for what appears to be a face, we can't tell unless the hikers had flashed a light onto it; that monkey/ape face maybe just our brains forming something familiar out of the unfamiliar.
Just to be on the safe side, I'd get out of that area as soon as I could once I saw that animal in the tree because it could be a bear cub and the mother might be on her way.

| I don't know what to say about it, its possible a little bear climed to high in the tree or, this is maine so it could be a porcupine or maybe an ape escaped from some zoo or worse, a private collection and was just sleeping in a tree. | |
