Is Johnny Cash goth?

Gothic?

No straight answer for you, but... goth or not, Johnny Cash is AMAZING and that's what it really comes down to...the man himself.

Oh the eternal struggle to find out what Johnny Cash is, on GB it was asked if he was emo and now here its asked if he's goth.

I adore him. Such depth and beauty in his music, I think he was a goth for his time at least and we all love him now!

I love the line in 'I walk the Line' when his wife says 'why are you weqaring all black, you look like your off ot a funeral' and he says 'I might be'

I think he was goth for his time because of how much unhappiness he wrote of and pain and his obsseion with the darker side of humanity.

Who cares? Labeling someone goth doesn't dictate whether or not I should like them. Look at Voltaire, he's *cough "goth" *cough* and I hate him while everyone else seems to worship him.

Mr Damnation and I used to have disagreements over Cash - I would claim him for us and he would claim him for punks.

I absolutely adore the man and I think he stands out as himself, totally unique and he could never be emulated although many have tried.

How is he punk?!

I can't say I think much of him at all (except maybe Ring of Fire), my (alchoholic and highly homophobic) dad used to rant on about how he was a "real man", and listen to him whilst crying into his beer way to much for me to have any fluffy bunny feelings towards him, but I digress.

Weather we like or dislike him is also kind of irrelevant. I mean, I like very early Tangerine Dream - which doesn't make them goth at all. Then again, I can't stand The Cure (pardon my blasphemy!) but there they are Goth as Goth can be.

Mr Cash had this whole "man in black" thing going on years before Andrew Eldrich learned to program the 808, years before Pete Murphy first though "Hmmmm, hairdye..." He's had this whole morbid, dark, funerial thing going on that is undeniably goth. But maybe considering he's not a part of the culture,maybe it would be better to say he was proto-goth.

Yeah, I don't get that at all. It's fairly easy to shoehorn him into Goth with a rather small effort. But punk?.. he doesn't fit in there at all.

I've been ahuge fan of Johnny Cash for years. I've always thought of him as a dark brooding fellow. So, yeah, I voted for Goth.

I think Johnny Cash, for his time, was about as Goth as you could get in the mainstream, just as Jerry Lee was the punk of the same day.

I have to say yes. He's one of my favorites.
