| Eagerly awaited Martha Stewart's Halloween 2013 magazine and I rushed to Barnes & Noble to pick up my copy yesterday. Beyond disappointed and out $10.00. It's terrible! The recipes are few and uninspired and the costume ideas suck a$$.
By the way, the Halloween mag put out by Better Homes and Gardens is awesome and half the price of the Martha Stewart version.

I wouldn't expect Martha Stewart to have anything other than G rated decor that's been done to death. Are you not allowed to at least preview the contents of the magazine before buying or is it one of those that have a plastic wrap?

Are you not allowed to at least preview the contents of the magazine before buying or is it one of those that have a plastic wrap? No plastic wrap. Last year's edition was really really good. I've been buying her Halloween mag off and on for the past few years and had never been disappointed, so I bought this year's expecting more of the same. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty to look at, but the recipes were kinda generic and not in keeping with any Halloween theme, and the costume ideas were uninspired. As much as I love Martha, I've always thought that she was a bit out of touch with the rest of us, but this year's Halloween mag really proves it. For a Little Red Riding Hood costume she suggested using some fabric costing $40 a yard, and wool felt squares costing $9 each for a pet costume. In one spread she had "victorian era" uranium glassware, as if we all have this kinda stuff just lying around.

| I've been pleasantly surprised by Martha Stewart's Halloween stuff before. I do think she's out of touch (or her editors are), though. I can't excuse it in the same way I do Vogue, where there are ridiculously overpriced things that I can enjoy the same way I enjoy paintings that will never hang in my home. Martha Stewart's magazine gives suggestions for how you, too, can live her Hamptons life, but in truth you can't. Unless you live in the Hamptons, in which case: Why haven't you invited all of us over? | |

| I get to me stabbed repeatedly on Halloween... time to go to the dentist for a cleaning, I can never figure out how they can just sit there and stab you with various sharp metal objects and then tell you how you shouldn't be bleeding... | |
