It seems to have gone well. Expecting to hear back by the 23rd. She has a mostly part-time staff, and would want to start me as part-time, but ideally wants someone with the time availability to be full-time. No bens, and she's not yet sure what she'd offer as a wage. I did get the impression she's straightforward, though, and will be up-front about what she can/can't offer. Though I haven't got experience with the fashion field directly, I shed light on how my art/framing sales skills are parallel to the skills needed at her shop.

Seems also like she's got mainly early-20s female workers at the shop; wondering if she sees my age as a boon b/c some older clients might find me easier to relate to? Don't know. She asked me to tell her about myself, and among other things I did mention I'm 34.

Ginger: I'm definitely seeing that; there's a wealthy-housewife demographic here though, and as much as they sometimes get on my nerves, their shopping habits could result in a good job for me. The shop's discount sales are pretty good, though; after my interview I bought a nice pair of winter gloves there for $16.

I'm happy I'm inside

I signed up for my first metalsmithing class. With a soldering iron and everything. Just a single afternoon seminar, to learn the rudiments. Mixed feelings though:

Good points -- All supplies included, which is rare. It's the most affordable one I've found ($56 includes instruction and supplies). I finally get to try something I've wanted to do since college. "Proficient at soldering single seams" is another skill I can put on a resume if I'm applying for hands-on types of work. Oh, and I leave the class with a set of rings I made!

Bad points -- It's the same day as a friend's baby shower (though I still plan to send a gift). Also, I'm spending $56 knowing I won't see immediate returns on that particular investment.

Gareth reminded me that I should consider how much work I would have to sell to offset the class cost, and considering nothing's selling lately, I initially talked myself out of the class. But going by the reasons above, and the likelihood that this new skill could result in a more varied and attractive collection of jewelry pieces, I talked myself back into it.

I emailed G with my new decision. His response: "k." Not that I should care what he thinks of this choice... but I kinda do.

^That is a good deal, with materials included and such. I took a metalsmithing class a few semesters ago, and was very happy I took it. Its not something you can just learn anywhere, or even have the ability to do outside a classroom (well, you can. But I suppose this is easier to do) I'm sure you'll do very well with the new skills, and I'm looking forward to seeing your new designs!

^^ Thanks! I'm really looking forward to it. The class is being held at the bead shop where I get many of my supplies. They are holding the class again at a later date (mid-Feb.), but at a time that could conflict with whatever job I have next.

Possibly. Even more likely if the bead shop offers its chain-mail class again. I have a book on chain mail jewelry, but direct instruction helps when diagrams trip me up.

Had a great time with my Alaskan last night.

I'm.... sorta happy? Meeting with a complete stranger tomorrow to talk about possible career options. He's a business contact of the ex-client I mentioned recently. He's got a collection (i.e. hundreds) of prints and watercolors from the '20s, '30s and '40s, and a number of prints from the Works Progress Administration efforts. Duke University is borrowing from his collection for an upcoming exhibit.

I'm borrowing Gareth's car to go see the guy tomorrow morning. I could have gotten there by bus, but it would have taken ridiculously long, considering I can get there by car in 10 mins.

I am so nervous! Fighting back intimidation.

They went and made us breakfast this morning at work. The whole shebang. Pancakes, sausage, bacon, toast, homefries, various juices.

I still haven't wanted to eat again today since this morning. Was very compelled to spend my lunch break just going for a walk, so I did.

Thanks. It helps to remind myself there's not a single objective at stake: I know I'm meeting with him, but not for a specific job, so I have nothing to lose. I can only be myself.

I got my old job back!!!

I had to leave it previously due to the fact that the hours clashed with some of my required courses, but some positions opened for weekend and spring break hours, so I'm able to work again. There aren't many hours available (and therefore my paycheck will be tiny), but I adore the job. When my depression was crippling, it was what kept me going; knowing that there was a student who would be waiting for me to help them. My students weren't the most cooperative, nor were they academic superstars. But they always put in effort, and by the time I had to leave, they had made excellent progress with their literacy and communication skills.

I've been volunteering as an after school tutor at another program (and will continue on with it) but it just isn't the same as having the same students for a prolonged period of time, and to watch them as they grow academically.

Me and Michael had a talk. A little concern he had about us.
He shed some tears. So he cares. And HE was the one that said he doesn't feel anything because of his depression. It was good letting it out. It just goes to show that we are totally and completely still in love.

^ That's great. I think it's common for depression and such to get in the way of a good relationship, but with a great relationship you can always overcome it.

Sounds like it was a painful talk but a good talk. That's proof of resilience in a relationship.

Was just thinking "oh, I should contact that client who was such a great client for so many years" regarding whether he knows of someone who would benefit from my experience. Searched for him via LinkedIn; found out he's now started his own interior design and fashion house. Emailed him. Fingers crossed.
