I know you are just being humorously quip but simply being clean didn't really protect you very well because it's not necessarily cleanliness but exposure to fleas carrying the Yersinia pestis bacterium. Back when the black death first popped up, the biggest factor in one's susceptibility to the plague was their economic standing--money--but that didn't fully protect them.

^^I wonder if hermits would have been able to survive better. They would have been away from most of the hustle and bussell of the plague, but those same bugs would have been able to travel to where they are.
